Health Benefits of Reading Fiction
There are many health benefits of reading fiction. In this blog post, I focus on how thrillers, in particular, helped me.
Proven Health Benefits of Reading Books, including Fiction
It’s no secret that there are many proven physical and mental health benefits of reading books, including fiction. As attested to by doctors and medical experts, here are some of them:
- strengthens the brain
- increases empathy
- builds vocabulary
- prevents cognitive decline
- reduces stress
- aids sleep
- alleviates depression
- lengthens life span
These have all been scientifically-backed by research and I’m sure, experienced firsthand by readers.
I’d like to add one more health benefit, though.
In particular, of reading psychological thrillers.
Health Benefit from Reading Thrillers
Did you know that reading fiction can also alleviate physical pain? It dulls intense body aches as you are swept into a different world, complex characters and engaging storyline — especially if you’re reading thrillers.
I’m speaking from personal experience. I’m glad I found these books which have been my companions in bed (both in the hospital and at home) and have helped me overlook my physical misery – even temporarily.
It’s also interesting to note that one of these authors is a Filipino-American: Jennifer Hillier. She’s a bestselling author whose novels have won awards, one of which is now being adapted for the small screen. As a Filipino, I’m proud of her!
The books below are all equally gripping and will take you to an emotional rollercoaster while you guess whodunit (the crime). I have a personal favorite among these. Can you guess which is it? My answer is at the end of this article.
Go check out these amazing books and tell me which you liked most:
- The Housemaid by Frieda McFadden
- The Locked Door by Frieda McFadden
- Jar of Hearts by Jennifer Hillier
- Little Secrets by Jennifer Hillier
- The Night Olivia Fell by Christina McDonald
It’s unfortunate that I’m not able to write a review for each of this book – yet. Maybe in the future, I will get around to it. I just wanted to share my good reads and hope you can get the same benefit like I did, if you need to.
Oh, by the way, my personal favorite is Jar of Hearts.
Did you know I also wrote a psychological thriller?
I hope you can also check it out – it might just be worth your time!
