Author Interview: Cris Mari
Getting to Know Pinoy Indie Authors
I truly feel Pinoy (Filipino) Indie Authors are underrated and, most times, underappreciated. In support, I am featuring interviews with Pinoy Indie Authors here on my Blog.
In addition, I have also created a Facebook Page and a Facebook Group specifically dedicated to empowering and equipping Pinoy writers to write, publish, and promote their books.
If you’re a Filipino indie author or writer, come join us! You’re welcome — whether you write in English, Taglish, or Tagalog. We’re all in this together!

Q & A with Cris Mari
1. In three words, describe yourself as an author.
Chic, authentic, transformative
2. Could you talk about the significance of titles in your works? How do you usually come up with them?
Titles are part of my books’ branding. I fashion them as if they were movie titles, so they should be short and memorable. I want titles with a certain punch—intriguing, drawing readers in. If I’m writing a series, I usually have one pattern for all titles under it. My novella And You Shall Be Silent, for instance, takes after its predecessor And You Shall Be Found.**
3. Have you ever experienced a moment of surprise or unpredictability while writing, where the story took an unexpected turn?
Oui, a lot of times. I normally don’t have a detailed outline—just a list of chapters and beats for each. Sometimes, in the middle of writing a story, I’d get bored or dissatisfied, and then I’d change elements or plot twists. Other times the new idea would just hit me like a Eureka moment.
4. In what ways do you think your writing has evolved or changed since your first published work?
The voice has definitely become mature, and the worldview is so different from that of a twenty-something yuppie. Over the years my writing has become bolder and more accommodating to themes my younger self would’ve shied away from.
5. Do you have a preferred genre to write in, or do you enjoy exploring various genres?
I tend to gravitate towards romcom, noir, and poetry, though I would sometimes challenge myself to write outside of my comfort zone. Ironically, I feel that scifi is where I’m weakest, yet I’ve written a fairly decent story for an anthology.
6. What role do beta readers or editors play in your writing process, and how do you handle feedback and criticism?
Editors and beta readers see my stories in a different light, helping me address plot holes and redundancies. I’m generally OK with feedback, though I tend to overthink certain pieces of advice. Some comments, especially those that are intrusive and/or developmental, are a tough pill to swallow. But a writer has a duty to ensure they’re producing quality work, so I just lick my wounds after.
7. Can you share any sneak peeks or hints about your upcoming projects or works-in-progress?
There’s a holiday rom-com to be released by mid-December, as well as the third Picard novel by the second quarter of 2026. A short story collection featuring werewolves in France is also in the works.

THE INQUSITOR
In the year 2132, there are only three hundred men left on Earth. Each of us old, diseased, damaged beyond healing. There are no women. Out of nowhere, a young, virile, perfect male arrives—the Inquisitor. He demands the truth behind the Purge which massacred females in a global scale to enforce the long-delayed justice by killing the guilty. And though it pains me to no end, I am forced to remember the horror and the lunacy of the past. . . and the part he unknowingly played in it. I am Ambrose. I am Herald.
