I talked about Practical Writing Advice and Tips for Young Writers as a resource speaker for the PUP DEFLL Writers' Circle last March 17, 2025 via Zoom.
Inspiring others is a deeply rewarding experience.
Last March 17, 2025, I was invited to be one of three resource speakers by the Writers’ Circle of the DEFLL (Department of English, Foreign Languages, and Linguistics) under the College of Arts and Letters of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP).
The webinar, SHOW AND TELL: THE FUNDAMENTALS OF BEING A WRITER was conducted via Zoom and attended by young writers and other college students.
I was asked to share my personal experience as a writer, my writing style, techniques, and any guidelines that may help and inspire aspiring writers. Since it is Women’s Month, the talk is related to highlighting women’s voice in literature, which is fitting because all three of us speakers are women. My other co-speakers are my good friend and also a multi-genre author, Yeyet Soriano; and an educator, Dr. Evelyn Antonio.
Practical Writing Advice and Tips for Young Writers
Speaking before students who are mostly in their 20s, I shared these two famous author quotes that have served to motivate me and continue to inspire me in my writing journey.

I have come to add something more to Stephen King’s quote, though, along the course of my writing journey. This is what I discussed with the young writers, as well as other writing tips. I also answered insightful questions from the audience.

I hope the students have learned from my talk about Practical Writing Advice and Tips for Young Writers, and it seems like they did because their feedback is very positive. Here is what they said: “On behalf of the DEFLL Writers’ Circle, we want to express our deepest gratitude for being part of our webinar titled “SHOW TO TELL: The Fundamentals of Being a Writer.” Your time, effort, and wisdom truly made this event meaningful and inspiring. Moreover, your insights have given us a deeper understanding of writing and storytelling. You have not only shared your knowledge but also encouraged aspiring writers to find their voice and tell their stories. We are incredibly grateful for your generosity in sharing your experiences and expertise with us.”
On my part, speaking before young, aspiring writers was truly a rewarding experience. I remember many years back when I was rekindling my passion for writing and venturing into self-publishing. I wished there were more local authors who could inspire, motivate and teach me. Back then, there were so few, and I had to learn by myself through research. Now that I am more equipped than I first started writing (but still learning, always learning), I am glad I have shared the things I’ve learned along the way–and it’s a great feeling.
