"My Purple Girl"
“My Purple Girl” is my new story included in BRUMultiverse’s Anthology, No White Flags.
The anthology, which also includes stories by Khiara Laurea, Yeyet Soriano, Johanna L Lee and Miel Salva, held an online Book Launch and Live Reading on August 25, 2024.
Authors, book bloggers, book reviewers, and family and friends joined us in the almost three-hour event. There was a brief interview with the Authors, after which we read the Blurbs. Excerpts from our stories were also read, soliciting giggles and “kilig,” then we answered the questions from the audience.
The Live Reading was awesome! It also included a bit of acting from the multi-talented Voice Actors, Ani and Matt.
For the question, “What’s your thought process in outlining a storyline?” I answered that I always think first of the beginning and the ending of my story and let it “brew” inside my head, creating scenes until the story is complete. This is my Brew Writing Process.
All in all, it was a joyous event and I got to meet new writers and readers! Thank you, BRUMultiverse!

MY PURPLE GIRL by Mayumi Cruz
Marlon and Merlin’s lives intersect at BRU, where Marlon, a swimming star, finds himself captivated by a girl, and Merlin, seeking solace from a painful past, yearns for a fresh start. Marlon’s relentless pursuit of victory and Merlin’s vow to avoid past mistakes collide, forcing both to question their paths. As Marlon questions his passion for swimming, Merlin wonders if change lies within. Will their desires for transformation lead to love or loss?
Blurb:
Marlon
When I transferred to BRU, I wasn’t expecting any change. I knew I would still be swimming. Swimming was a passion that drove me to do my best in any competition, earning me fame and popularity. I didn’t think of it as anything other than a way of life.
But when I laid eyes on my purple girl, everything changed. Suddenly, my thoughts weren’t always about swimming or winning. Suddenly, my mind was filled with her. . . and the possibility of us.
When a prank instigated by my teammates gave me an opportunity to ask her out, I seized the moment. But she turned me down for a reason that made me question myself.
Was it bad to make the most out of my passion for swimming?
Was I wrong in doing my very best to win in every competition?
Because if I was, I may never have a chance at her at all.
Merlin
When I transferred to BRU, I was desperately craving for change. The past two years were traumatic and chaotic for me when my swimmer boyfriend died, overdosing on performance-enhancing drugs. I longed for escape, and I thought I got it in a new school with a new set of people.
Freed from the shadow of my past, I never wanted to put myself in that ugly situation again. So, I made a firm vow that I will never allow myself to commit the same mistake.
But fate played a cruel joke on me.
The first guy able to spark joy in me after a long time of bleak sadness turned out to be the very kind of person I promised myself I will never get involved with again.
Was I wrong to wish that he’s not what he is?
Was it too much to ask life for a total change?
Or . . . was it me who had to change?

THE INQUSITOR
In the year 2132, there are only three hundred men left on Earth. Each of us old, diseased, damaged beyond healing. There are no women. Out of nowhere, a young, virile, perfect male arrives—the Inquisitor. He demands the truth behind the Purge which massacred females in a global scale to enforce the long-delayed justice by killing the guilty. And though it pains me to no end, I am forced to remember the horror and the lunacy of the past. . . and the part he unknowingly played in it. I am Ambrose. I am Herald.
