Project Hulmahan

As an artist, Mayumi Cruz of Galerie Mayumi is  one of the participating visual artists for “Hope Lasts,” an art exhibition organized by Project Hulmahan where over 700 artists from all over the country transformed almost 1,500 wooden shoe lasts into unique artworks to help communities nationwide.

For my artworks for Project Hulmahan, I chose to convert them into LAMPS. These shoe lasts have served shoemakers well for many years. Though they are now “retired,” I wanted them to still shine and have their Last Hurrah, making them both aesthetic and still functional. When lit up, they can transform any room into another world, another place, another time.

Project Hulmahan is a Philippine art-driven, mutual aid fundraising initiative in support of community-based food sovereignty, livelihood, and art programs.

About Galerie Mayumi

MAYUMI CRUZ: THE AUTHOR AS AN ARTIST

When words fail me, I turn to colors.

As a child, I had been doodling, drawing, and sketching ever since I can remember.

I used to make comic strips and painted on illustration boards using poster paints. Slowly, I dabbled in watercolor and oil pastel.

Now I’m using mostly acrylic in creating my art. I’m also using various or mixed media in some of my artworks, which add meaning and depth to my creations.

I am basically self-taught, aside from a two-day art workshop I attended many, many years ago — which bored me to death. My art style tends to be a blend of realism and expressionism, but I am also able to create in a variety of styles, appealing to diverse artistic tastes and aesthetics.

I believe art should tell stories and evoke emotions. My colors are vivid, vibrant and compelling as the stories they tell.

Browse Galerie Mayumi for my original, handmade artworks created with love and quality art materials.
