Author Interview: Edlyn Pulmano (Aninong Manunulat)

For today’s Featured Pinoy Indie Author, we have Edlyn Pulmano.

Edlyn Pulmano, or more commonly known as Aninong Manunulat in the writing community, is a prolific writer on paid platforms and a published author under TBC Publications.

About Edlyn Pulmano (Aninong Manunulat)

Edlyn Miranda Pulmano, who writes under the pen name Aninong Manunulat, is a writer whose creative journey commenced in 1995 with poetry and fiction. Life, however, took her on a different path, leading her through the challenges of college, the demands of work, the commitments of marriage, and the joys of motherhood. During this period, she found herself stepping away from her passion for writing, her voice silenced by the busyness of her evolving life.

In 2019, Aninong Manunulat experienced a powerful rekindling of her creativity when her children sought her help in crafting their own fictional stories for school. This moment not only reignited her love for storytelling but also inspired her to share her own short stories on Wattpad. What began as a personal project quickly flourished into something much larger. She embraced the opportunity to enter writing contests on Facebook, and her heart soared with excitement when her first story was selected for publication in a horror anthology. This success was just the beginning, as she soon celebrated two additional wins.

Within two years, she expanded her horizons to paid platforms, skillfully publishing three novels—The Vampire’s Cradle, LUCY, and SWITCHED—across various venues. Her journey also led her to self-publish her book Y2, while The Pages Between Us found its way into the world published by TBC Publications.

Primarily focused on the slice-of-life genre, Aninong Manunulat also ventures into romance, fantasy, horror, and action. Her chosen pen name, which signifies her belief that shadows hold our deepest secrets and unspoken truths, reflects her profound connection to the human experience. Through her narratives, she strives to illuminate the beauty and complexity of everyday life, forging meaningful connections with her readers along the way.

Q & A with Edlyn Pulmano (Aninong Manunulat)

Can you take us on a journey through the “writer’s room” of your mind? What is it like in there:

If you were to journey into my mind, you would discover a writer who passionately believes in the power of love and friendship. You would encounter the child within me, forever captivated by wonder and imagination or my unspoken fears and experiences, revealing unsettling truths that linger in the shadows.

What’s the most unexpected place or situation where you’ve found inspiration for your writing?

In the quiet moments before sleep, nestled in my bed, and in my dreams, inspiration often strikes unexpectedly. It’s as if my mind awakens, conjuring ideas that dance just out of reach. Similarly, when I’m busy with household chores or navigating the bustling streets with my camera, creativity surges in the most inconvenient of times. Ideas flood in everywhere, except when I’m at my computer, ready to capture them. It’s a bittersweet irony—those flashes of inspiration seem to thrive in the very moments I can’t immediately jot them down.

Share a “writer’s secret” with us—a quirky habit or ritual you have while writing that you’ve never told anyone about.

“One of my quirkiest writing rituals is creating a ‘mood playlist’ for each story I work on. Before I dive into writing, I curate a collection of songs that capture the essence of my characters and the emotions I want to convey. I play this song on repeat while I write, letting the music transport me into the world I’m creating. It’s almost like having a personal soundtrack that guides my creativity and helps me get into the right mindset. It’s a little secret that makes my writing sessions feel more immersive!”

Music is a fundamental part of my life, deeply influencing my writing. The melodies and rhythms often shape the atmosphere of my stories.

If you could step into the world of one of your stories, which one would it be, and what adventure would you embark on?

If I were to embark on one of my stories, it would be “LUCY”, the daughter of the devil, sent from hell on a quest. I’m captivated by her innocence as she navigates the mortal world, tasked with finding the 10 evil souls she inadvertently released from hell. Despite her origins, Lucy embodies sweetness and sincerity, exposing the dark truths that people desperately try to conceal. Through her eyes, I want to reveal a profound realization: “There are more devils in the mortal world than in hell.” I’ve always longed to step into her shoes, sharing her journey and illuminating the hidden darkness within humanity. Lucy is published in Sofanovel in 2020.

If you could co-write a book with any author, living or dead, who would it be, and what kind of story would you create together?

Back in the year 2019, I had a dream that has almost faded from my memory. In it, I found myself in a quaint library, walking toward a small desk full of piled books. An old man stood up as I approached, saying, “I’ve been waiting for you for a long time.” As he retrieved a piece of white paper from his drawer, he handed it to me, saying, “Here’s a list of your stories—remember them well.”

I accepted the paper, only to realize it was filled with countless titles, perhaps hundreds. Unfortunately, I couldn’t recall a single one. If I could revisit that dream, I would ask him to write those stories with me. I’ve taken to calling him BACKDOOR KNIGHT, as I never had the chance to learn his name.

I want us to delve into the realms of imagination where we can weave tales that blend fantasy and love, horror or historical, in this world or to another. Our stories will transport readers to otherworldly landscapes, exploring the intricacies of life, the power of dreams, and the weight of sacrifices. Each narrative will serve as a mirror reflecting real-life truths, encouraging introspection and offering profound messages.

Through vivid characters and gripping plots, we’ll explore themes of resilience, the search for purpose, and the choices that shape our destinies. Whether it’s a haunting tale of survival in a shadowy realm or an epic adventure through a magical landscape, our stories will resonate with the human experience, leaving readers pondering their own lives long after they turn the last page.

Mayumi Cruz The Inquisitor COVER

THE INQUSITOR

In the year 2132, there are only three hundred men left on Earth. Each of us old, diseased, damaged beyond healing. There are no women. Out of nowhere, a young, virile, perfect male arrives—the Inquisitor. He demands the truth behind the Purge which massacred females in a global scale to enforce the long-delayed justice by killing the guilty. And though it pains me to no end, I am forced to remember the horror and the lunacy of the past. . . and the part he unknowingly played in it. I am Ambrose. I am Herald.
