Getting to Know Pinoy Indie Authors

I truly feel Pinoy (Filipino) Indie Authors are underrated and, most times, underappreciated. In support, I am featuring interviews with Pinoy Indie Authors here on my Blog.

In addition, I have also created a Facebook Page and a Facebook Group specifically dedicated to empowering and equipping Pinoy writers to write, publish, and promote their books.

If you’re a Filipino indie author or writer, come join us! You’re welcome — whether you write in English, Taglish, or Tagalog. We’re all in this together

Q & A with Cara Vianca Funa

1. Can you describe a typical day in your writing world, from morning coffee to late-night inspiration?

My typical “day” of writing takes place between late afternoon and around the witching hour. I’m no morning person, so I find that inspiration sparks the brightest amid the darkest hours. When it’s quiet and peaceful, I can hear my own thoughts and find it easier to delve into my work. Sometimes, though, when I’m cramped up in my humble studio, I like to take my workstation with me and visit my favorite cafe to enjoy my favorite matcha latte and the air conditioning.

2. When you’re not writing, where do you often find your best ideas or story sparks?

My best ideas come to me when I’m reminiscing about my past or get lost daydreaming. When I’m deep in my own thoughts, I feel like that’s when I can brew my best stories. I also feel like my mind goes wild when I enter the world of other creatives through books, movies, and TV shows. I get to imagine and relate to them, which winds up with me having some of the ideas trickle into my own work.

3. Share a “writing ritual” that helps you get into the creative zone—no matter how unusual it may be.

Honestly, my writing ritual is not that complicated. All I really do is find some nice background music on YouTube (of course, without ads) and make a hot drink, like coffee or tea, to help me ease into it.

4. If you could co-author a novel with any writer, living or dead, who would be your dream collaborator?

H. P. Lovecraft, no explanation needed.

5. Imagine your favorite character from your own work—what would they say if they could critique your writing style?

I think that Raul from my novelette, Blood of the Principalia, would say that inspite of the whimsical nature of my stories, where I take my readers to other worlds filled with magic and mystery, you can find humanity in the story. My main characters are grounded by morality but flawed by their own human nature, and that tension makes them authentic.
